Lice infest people of all ages, rich or poor. Lice prefer clean hair because their nits (eggs) stick to cleaner hair much better than oily hair. Beside direct physical contact, using infected person’s personal belongings such comb, hair brush, towels, bed linen, etc also spread lice. Children are the most infected with lice than adults.

You know you have lice when you experience intense bouts of itching on the scalp and the back of the neck and soreness on touch. When you see the scalp, area in and around the nape of the neck, you will see small white eggs called nits attached steadfastly to hair shafts. Unlike dandruff, these nits can be bit stubborn; hence pulling them out with fingers can prove to be difficult.

Easy to prevent, but difficult to treat – good hygiene is the most effective prevention of head lice.

The nurse told us that though the NIX package tells you to keep that shampoo on the head for ten minutes, in reality this does nothing. She advised us to leave it on for 8 to 10 hours.

HOURS, people. That’s a big difference in timing, wot?

As an alternative, she put forth Ye Olde Mayonnaise Technique. This is 8 – 10 hours with a jar of regular-fat mayo slathered all over the head. The lice are smothered, deviled, pickled, and finally savored by Satan’s own imps at Hell’s Picnic. We couldn’t think of anything less appetizing: PASS. We opted for the NIX.

Head lice are parasitic insects that live on the scalps of humans and require human blood in order to survive. They are easily passed from person to person, regardless of hygiene, and are found throughout the world. Now, when it comes to getting rid of head lice, there are many different products out there, from chemical shampoos and cleansers to specialty vacuum cleaners. Rather than turning to such technological marvels, if you would prefer to learn how to get rid of lice naturally, there are several steps involved.

Following all three steps will dramatically improve your chances of avoiding re-infestation later.

Before you begin, one of the most popular home remedies to get rid of head lice involves working mayonnaise into the hair and leaving it there for about two hours before washing the hair and continuing on. You may want to tuck the hair into a shower cap while the mayo is there in order to reduce the potential mess.

postheadericon Leafsoup Life: Get Rid of Lice with Mineral Oil

I only saw them a few times each year, but some of my earliest memories are of my grandparents. My Mom has seven sisters. I have one brother and eighteen first cousins on her side of the family, so when we visited my grandparents on holidays, their house was so crowded that there weren’t nearly enough chairs for everyone.

The older folks sat on the living room chairs. Most of the kids played games upstairs, or outside if it didn’t rain. My aunts chattered while they worked in the kitchen, and the uncles stood with their backs to the wood stove in the living room, swapping stories about fishing, hunting, farming, trucks, anything “manly”. Grandpa told more stories than anyone.

My favorite sitting place was on the linoleum floor in the living room where I could listen to Grandpa’s stories. They improved each time he told them.

Head lice

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp, where they lay their eggs. Head lice do not spread disease. Having head lice does not mean you are not clean.

What do head lice look like? Lice have 3 stages – the egg (nit), the nymph and the adult.

  • Nits are whitish-grey, tan or yellow ovals, approximately the size of a grain of sand. They stick to the hair close to the scalp and can look like dandruff. Nits hatch in 9 to 10 days.
  • Nymphs are baby lice. They look like adult lice but are smaller.
  • Adult lice are approximately the size of a sesame seed and are hard to see. Adult lice can live for up to 30 days on a person’s head, but they die within 3 days away from the scalp.Â
