Children are the primary mode of transportation for a louse. Contrary to popular belief, a louse cannot jump or fly. Children going back to school in August and September are going to be exposed to many things, including head lice. October brings with it Halloween and lots of fun “Fall Festival” type things at school. Children in most areas get to dress up in their favorite costumes with their friends and just have fun. Sharing wigs and other hair accessories is a given, especially with younger children.
Thanksgiving break is a very fun time for families and children to get together for a huge dinner and share sentiments. Children often play cowboys and Indians for fun or to entertain family and guests. Changing roles includes exchanging head gear and the risk of transferring a louse from child to child.
Winter break usually consists of at least 3 weeks of off-time for children and teachers. During that time they celebrate Hanukah, Christmas, Yule or any other wintertime holiday. Many children participate in celebratory pageantry; which includes costume changes and the potential to transfer a louse from one person to another.
Spring break is considered an incredible time to relax after January and February with few extended breaks. This is often the last big break of the year before summer vacation. Many families choose to go on vacation during spring break where children get to meet others from across the nation. Sharing toys and playing on picnic blankets are prime opportunities to contract head lice.
Back to school head lice prevention doesn’t have to be expensive or difficult. Many things you probably already own are wonderful preventatives. One single type of essential oil may be the answer to your prevention needs.

Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your normal shampoo, conditioner or leave-in tonic. Oddly enough, head lice do not like the strong smell and will avoid setting up camp in hair treated with tea tree oil. Unfortunately most people don’t like the medicinal smell, but it may be masked by other hair products or by adding lavender oil.
Another alternative is to purchase products especially formulated for head lice prevention. Look for non-allergenic, all natural products that are not only good for your hair but the environment as well. You don’t have to smell like a medicine cabinet to have the best head lice prevention products available today.
