- RID Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo
Last summer I noticed that my youngest had problems keeping her hands out out her hair. Scratch, scratch, scratch. “Mommy, my head itches”. I thought she just had some dirt or sand in her hair. Well, upon closer inspection I was horrified to find lice in her hair. Yuck!
Well, my battle with the lice wars began. I washed everything we owned in hot water. I bought the proper sprays and shampoos. I even had my doctor prescribe something. Well, after a few agonizing days, we were lice-free again.
Here’s what worked!
1.) Licemeister comb (this is not to be confused with the combing products that come with the Rid, Nix etc.) – If you comb their hair at least 3 different times a day, this comb will remove both newly hatched lice and their nits.
2.) Tea Tree Oil – Homeopaths claim that Tea Tree oil is an effective scabacide and will not only kill lice but will also repel them. I don’t know if this is true but I found it to be an excellent addition to the detangler products I had to use to get the comb thorough my Shirley Temple-headed youngest.
3.) Manicure scissors – Yes, I cut the nits out. Using a pair of little scissors will allow you to cut the nits out not opening up your child to the nickname of “Patches”. (Don’t forget to put all of the cut-out strands in a zip-loc bag and throw them out when you are done)
Here’s what didn’t work…
1,) Rid and Nix. I tried them both. They would kill some of the lice some of the time but neither one of them killed eggs as they claimed. Hence, the newly hatched lice a couple of days after the initial treatment.
2.) Combs supplied by Rid and Nix. You would have to have dreadlocks for those things to really break the nit from the hair strand. Their teeth just aren’t fine enough – especially on little people hair.
3.) Lindane – It killed the live lice pretty effectively but had no effect on the nits. Not to mention that it is also flammable, poisonous, and can cause seizures.
Okay, so there was my experiences. Many parents and the directress of our Montessori school said the same thing to me when I had to sheepishly admit that my girls were “contaminated”.
Once I used the combination of the Licemeister comb, the Tea Tree oil, and the nit removal, we were lice-free within 24 hours!
