Rid Lice Killing Shampoo
Rid Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo is a topical application of pyrethrin and piperonyl both used as insecticides in the treatment of head lice.
Mechanism of Act
Pyrethrin paralyses the nerves of the head lice causing their death. It does not have an effect on the eggs of the lice and therefore has to be reapplied in 7-10 days to ensure that any newly hatched eggs are targeted as well.
Clinical Use and Benefits
Rid Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo is used to treat head lice, crab lice and pubic lice. The 0.03% strength shampoo is available in 2oz containers. Patients are advised to apply the shampoo to wet hair and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing.
Adverse Effects
Patients experiencing a severe allergic reaction including rash, hives, itching and difficult breathing should stop using this medication and seek emergency help immediately.
Commonly patients may experience irritation and contact dermatitis at the site of application. Patients that continue to experience contact dermatitis are advised to consult their health care provider.
Contraindications and Precautions
The use of Rid Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo is not recommended in patients that have a known hypersensitivity to pyrethrin, ragweed, chrysanthemums or any other ingredients of this formulation.
Rid Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo is a pregnancy category drug C and should be used with extreme caution in pregnant women only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. It is considered relatively safe to use in breast feeding.
Interactions
There are no known significant interactions with Rid Maximum Strength Lice Killing Shampoo, however, patients are advised to consult a health care provider before taking any other medications when using this treatment.
