What’s new: Nit Picky in Redlands
What it is: A mobile head lice and nit removal service.
What it offers: Head lice and nit treatment, information and training. Nit Picky is owned and operated by sisters Jessica Cook, of Redlands, and Shannon Karrigan, of Temecula.
Lice are tiny insects that live in people’s hair and nits are their eggs. The business boasts the best products, tools and techniques for the treatment of head lice.
“When it comes to lice there is no quick fix,” Cook said. “Manually removing them is the best way.”
Nit Picky was born out of the owners’ childhood struggles with lice. Because of a high rate of infestation in their Los Angeles neighborhood, Cook and her three sisters were afflicted with head lice multiple times, she said
Nit Picky uses pesticide-free products and a special comb that removes 99 percent of the nits, Cook said. The owners travel to their clients’ homes to provide the service.
“The hard way is the usually the right way,” Cook said “That is why we are here.”
The cost is $55 per hour. Discounts are available to low-income families, Cook said. The owners also train parents and caregivers on how to deal with lice infestations.
When it’s open: Hours vary based on customers’ needs.
When it opened: February
Where it is: Redlands and Temecula
Who owns it: Shannon Karrigan and Jessica Cook
About the owners: Before opening the business, Cook worked as a teacher’s aide. She lives with her family in Redlands. Shannon Karrigan used to work as an administrative assistant and lives with her family in Temecula.
What’s next: Cook and Karrigan hope to set up programs with local schools and the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service to establish informational programs on how to prevent, detect and treat lice.
