Lice are something that causes a family a great deal of grief because by the time you discover that your family has lice, it’s too late to prevent it. Even worse, you have to treat your entire family’s heads, and the cost can quickly soar into the hundreds of dollars. Even worse, you might end up with your family becoming re-infected with lice because you failed to rid your house of lice.

According to Aboutkidshealth.ca, lice can live off the body for up to twenty-four hours, and this means that anyone who enters your house could contract lice, so you need to make sure that you clean out your house. So, how do you start in ridding your house of lice? Here’s a step-by-step guide to ridding your house of lice:

Treat all family members. First, you must treat the heads of all family members for lice. Treating only the infected member fails to be enough because the other family members are likely infected, too. This means that failing to treat all family members leaves risk of re-infection.

Treat/Discard Comb and brushes. You can soak your combs and brushes in lice shampoo, but it is wise to throw away brushes because lice can bury themselves down into the brush’s bristles, hiding away from the solution. Be sure to throw away any hair ribbons and material barrettes, too. These are not worth saving and chancing a re-infection of your entire household.

Wash bedding. It’s important to wash all bedding, including the blankets and bedspreads because, again, lice can live off the body for up to twenty-four hours, according to Aboutkidshealth.ca., and you go back to your bed before a twenty-four hour period is up. If you fail to wash all bed linens, then you risk the chance of lice re-infection.

Wash clothing. While it might not be necessary to wash all the clothing in your closets, you might want to wash (in hot water) the last clothing that your family members wore. Too, it would serve your family well to wash any clothing (in hot water) that they plan to wear within the twenty-four hour period after treatment.
