postheadericon How to Rid Your Child’s Hair (and Your Home) of Pesky Lice

Growing up I heard plenty of stories about head lice, although I’ve never had it myself. Stories included useless banter about “filthy heads” and “neglected children.”

Can you imagine the shock and horror when I received the phone call from my daughter’s school, informing me I needed to pick her up?

My first reaction was not that she was going to develop some incurable disease. My first reaction was “They’re going to call children’s services on me!!” Please allow me to indulge my “tried and true” home remedies for removing head lice from your life.

The saying around here is: “It’s a compliment for your child to have lice!” Crazy as that sounds, it’s true. Lice do NOT like dirty hair. They can not attach their eggs to dirty, greasy hair. So by your child having head lice, that’s the “reward” for keeping a clean child.

Please do not get upset and run for the scissors. You do not need to shave your child’s head if they have head lice. If they are a girl, every stranger that you pass by on the street is going to know your child has lice. The longer the hair, the more patience you are going to need but it’s not impossible. My daughter had hair down to her buttocks the first time she was infested. I also happened to be pregnant. If I can survive it, I’m sure you can too.

Please do not make your first step going to the store and buying those expensive over the counter lice shampoos. They are not as effective as natural remedies. They are hazardous and also poisonous. They also require at least two treatments.

Here are a few simple things you will need to start:

1. A good sized bottle of hair conditioner

2. A shower cap

3. A lice comb (you can get away with a cheaper version of a doggy/kitty flea comb)

Step 1: Completely saturate your child’s hair with the conditioner! (I love “Queen Helene” hair cholesterol)

Step 2: Place shower cap on child’s head and leave it on for at least four hours.
