How To Prevent Head Lice
How To Prevent Head Lice
By Kaycee Nilson Mar. 19, 2006
I know this is a gross subject to talk about, but it is getting time for those of us with school-age children to worry about getting that call from school saying that our child has head lice. If you want to prevent head lice in your child this year, here is a helpful Kaycee Tip.
First, start rinsing your child’s head in 1/2 cup of vinegar after the head has been washed. Also wash sheets and bedding in hot water with 1/2 cup of vinegar in the washing machine. Use the hottest setting on a dryer rather than putting the sheets on a clothes-line. I would even wash the pillows.
I’m not trying to gross anyone out, but this is a malady that the parents of America have been battling. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about or think you are a dirty housekeeper. This is just something that kids get because they are stupid and don’t tell anyone why they are digging into their heads.
I don’t know about other school systems, but here in Chicago, they check the kids on the second day of school and again in the spring time. And yes, I battled the dreaded bug myself. How I know that vinegar is the best way to get rid of the bug and keep it away was advice from my mother. As usual she proved that the natural way is the best way.
We spent money upon money on those expensive lice kits that came with bedding spray and still couldn’t get rid of them. We dried the pillows after washing them in straight hot water and stuck them into plastic bags. But it didn’t work. We nearly went insane trying to find ways to get rid of head lice and to get the kids lice free.
Finally we came upon the miracle of vinegar and ever since, no sign of head scratching, no bugs, no lice eggs. And most importantly, no days off from school when the rest of the class has been sent home because of an infestation.
Yes, my life is easier now thanks to vinegar, for I have discovered other ways to use vinegar. Put a cup in your white clothes and no dinginess. Run a cup through your coffee maker and it will keep the gunk from building up making your coffee maker break down. Even a cup rubbed into your pet’s coat will keep fleas away!
In my eyes, vinegar is the miracle of the grocery store. Why, I can even get blood out of clothing just by pre-treating with vinegar. And it’s also wonderful to get wine stains out of the carpet after a party as well as getting out pet stains on the carpet or against your couch where Stewart liked to spray before he was neutered.
If you don’t believe me, take a pair of dingy white socks, soak them in vinegar for 30 minutes and then wash them. The difference you see will make you thank me!
