How to Get Rid of Lice and Keep Them Away
My kids have not only come home with the dreaded “Good People Get Lice, Too” notice, reporting a case (or cases) of lice in their classrooms, they’ve come home with the nasty little bugs. Not just once or twice, either. Let me tell you, it is NO fun! Lice are very contagious, pesky, resilient little creatures. They’re very much like fleas for kids, only you can’t put a few drops of pesticide (like Advantage for cats and dogs) on the backs of the kids’ neck and call it cured. Nope. It’s a lot trickier than that!
When my daughter first told me her head was itchy, I thought she just had dirty hair. So, into the tub she went. While I was scrubbing her hair, I noticed it looked red and bumpy behind her ears. Warning sign #1! Lice love it behind the ears and itchy, red rashes are often signs of little lice bites! OK, out of the tub, hair cleaned, everything’s good, right? Wrong. The next morning, her head was still itchy. There we were, standing in our kitchen, I was on the phone with my mom, trying to pour a cup of coffee and look at my daughters head at the same time. Lo and behold, something (a live bug!) crawled off her head and landed on the counter. You could have knocked me over with a feather! So began my journey into the world of pediculicides (a fancy term for lice killers). What I finally learned is that the stuff I spent tons of money on at the drugstore didn’t work. The horrid prescription stuff from the doctor didn’t work. Listerine didn’t work and either did mayonnaise, olive oil or Vaseline. Here I will tell you what did work and has kept our house lice-free even after several more outbreaks among schoolmates and friends.
