How to get rid of lice and eggs?
Launder clothing in the hottest temperature of water that the fabric will allow without shrinkage. Ignore normal washing instruction and accept some pigment fading in order to hard boil any lice eggs. Dry the clothing on the hottest setting as well. Seal clothing and bedding in plastic bags after laundering – other than enough to get by with or about a month. Be a minimalist – if you want to exterminate the lice in the shortest amount of time as possible – one blanket, one pillow and one towel per person. (no sheets or other bedding) Vacuum all upholstery, mattresses and carpets. (cannot guarantee that homes with wall to wall carpet will be able to exterminate lice without removing carpeting – if it is infested) Buy plastic for weatherproofing and cover all upholstery and mattresses – for about a month. Wipe down daily. Clean all hard surfaces – and hard floors using a bleach solution of 10 parts water to 1 part bleach. Wipe down commonly used surfaces daily. Treat all household members scalps simultaneously! Method 1 – Drowning Saturate the hair and scalp completely with mayonnaise or oil. Cover your head with a plastic bag or shower cap for 12 to 24 hours. Heat the shower cap with a blow dryer, or just sit in the hot sun. Shampoo hair without wetting it first. Saturate the entire head with approximately 6 oz. of shampoo per household member. Cover your scalp again with plastic and allow the shampoo to sit for about thirty minutes to allow the oil to break down. Rinse your hair as thoroughly as possible, but don’t worry if your scalp still feels somewhat oily. More oil will be removed in the sectioning and combing process. Comb your hair out with a wide tooth comb to remove any tangles. Section hair into 1 inch sections starting at the nape of the neck. Use hair fastening devices to keep uncombed hair out of the way while you are combing out individual 1 x 1/2 inch sections using a specialty comb for removing lice. Read instructions for the correct way to use which ever specialty comb you have selected. Make sure that the section you are combing is the correct size for the comb to allow the combs teeth to rest against the scalp before you slide the comb entirely to the tip of that hair section. Repeat from the other direction on the same section. Rinse the comb in a pan of hot water after each 1 x 1/2 inch section – wipe with tissue before moving to a new section. Braid or secure your hair in a ponytail so that you will know which larger section you have completed. Continue moving up the back or the head in 1 inch rows following the steps previously mentioned until you have completed the entire back side of your head. Repeat the process on the other side of the head until the every section has been completed. Wash hair again using shampoo without water to remove the remainder of oil if you want, but take note that lice have a more difficult time attaching egg sacs to an oily scalp. Use a plastic shower cap when sleeping to keep any live lice from re-infesting. Inspect the scalp daily and repeat steps 2-12 in one week and each week for the next 3 weeks.
Method 2 – Coconut Oil Buy a jar of extra virgin organic coconut oil. Melt about two spoonfuls of the solidified oil and let it cool a bit. You don’t want to burn your scalp. Apply the oil liberally to your scalp. Do this at night so you can wash your hair the next morning. Massage well into your scalp. Make sure to put the oil on your hands and work it through the length of hair. The coconut oil will suffocate lice and their eggs. Wrap your hair in the plastic wrap you use to cover food, or wear a shower cap. If you’re sharing a house and you don’t want people to see you looking weird, you can skip that step. Shampoo your hair. Use a fine-toothed comb to remove dead lice and eggs the next morning.
Method 3 – Lice Comb Purchase a metal, long-tooth lice comb and a small magnifying glass. The comb teeth should be approximately 1.5 to 2 inches in length. Wash your hair. Towel dry your hair. Place one tablespoon full of conditioner on the palm of your hand, and rub this into your damp hair before you begin to comb the hair. Fill a large, light-coloured bowl with steaming hot water. Divide your hair into sections and comb each section, dipping the comb into the hot water after each stroke. Ensure your hair is combed in all directions, especially at the base of the neck and behind the ears. This should be done for 15 to 20 minutes. Place the bowl near a good light source and examine it with the magnifying glass. Lice and their eggs are very distinctive and will be recognized if present. Treat for 14 days by using the long-tooth comb while in the shower. Apply conditioner after shampooing hair. Comb the conditioner out with the long-tooth comb for several minutes. Be sure to comb the hair in all directions. Rinse out any remaining conditioner. Perform another visual check
