Head lice home remedies is a term you will need to become familiar with if you have children. Like it or not as your family has contact with people, then an infestation is almost inevitable no matter what precautions you try to take. Head lice are contagious but they need actual physical contact to spread. However this is surprisingly easy to do especially with kids. Think about how they play with school friends. They hug, wrestle, sit close, share each other’s coats, hats, scarves, hair brushes and more. All these innocent activities offer the potential to spread head lice from one person to another. Once one member of a family has been infected the spread continues to others.

Head lice are wingless and so cannot fly nor can they leap like fleas. They walk and crazy as it sounds it only takes creatures from one infected person to crawl onto the touching hair of someone else. They can just as easily move from hair onto fabric furniture like sofas, onto bedding, hair brushes and as mentioned clothing such as hats and then spread to another person.

The adults of the species are called lice and the newly hatched until they reach adulthood are known as nymphs. Although lice bite the scalp and draw blood to feed they do not carry diseases. Probably at worst their bites may cause irritation or the itchiness might lead to fingernails scratches and potential infection. The lice then are not dangerous just unpleasant and there is often the stigma of uncleanliness although this too is a fallacy, clean or dirty hair is all the same to them.

Many different ideas and people’s own head lice home remedies from drowning the little critters in olive oil to smothering them with mayonnaise and many others things are bandied about. The reality is that a good over the counter head lice shampoo is the one remedy that will put paid to live headlice. Several application may be needed but they do what they are supposed to and what they have been invented for. The one aspect of treating a head lice infestation that many people fail at, is eradicating the lice eggs or as they are properly called, nits.

The adult female lays up to half a dozen eggs per day and has the potential in her life span to produce around a hundred eggs. The biggest problem is the female attaches each fresh eggs to a hair shaft with a glue she produces specially for the job. These nits are positioned close to the scalp where the human body heat can assist in incubation and so that the newly hatched louse has instant access to a food source, i.e. the scalp.

Simply treating the hair even with a dedicated shampoo will not shift the eggs as the washing action does not detach them from their bonded place on a hair shaft. That is the simple reason why all head lice home remedies are ineffective. The nits have to be extracted from the hair other wise they will simply hatch, reproduce and the infestation and spread will continue.
