Unicode For all of those who have had problems embeding your font inside flash expecting either some other language or a special character (such as a non-breaking hyphen) to appear here is some things I have learned.
The real problem here is how flash “embeds” your font or rather how it doesn’t. Getting some information from posts on this forum, quasimondo’s site, and bit-101 and being faced with the problem of getting this to work I got something to work…at least in my case.
I was trying to embed a font that contained the special character unicode 2011 which is the non-breaking hyphen. The only font that I got it to display correctly with the font embeded was didot, but didot was just not going to work for design purposes. Other fonts that supported that character would render it incorrectly making it look as if there were a space after the hyphen but there wasn’t and should’t be.
Flash can only embed a certain amount of glyphs from a font after that it does some weird stuff like not rendering characters correctly So what I did is use the font Arial Unicode (which contains around 55k glyphs) font and stripped out all the characters I wasn’t going to use. Didot, the font mentioned above that displayed the character correctly has about 474 glyphs so I used that as a boundary for the font I was creating.
Long story short that worked for me and hopefully someone will find it useful. If I am incorrect on these findings someone please correct.
