Comb Lice Away Forever and Other Hair Lice Removal Tips
In removing hair lice or head lice, the procedure to comb lice out of the hair is indispensable. Even with the new formulations for treatment and non-pharmacological alternatives, combing lice out is the most effective method of hair lice removal. The National Pediculosis Association has published a report that states combing head lice is four times more effective in getting rid of hair lice than malathion or permethrin based shampoos. People who used these preparations found that using shampoos and lotions alone for hair lice removal weren’t enough and that combing the hair with a good lice comb helps finish the job. It also helps keeps re-infestation at bay. All you need is time and a good amount of patience.
For removing hair lice, comb the hair with either a hard plastic or metal lice comb. These are combs that have fine teeth and can remove adult lice, nymphs and even the eggs or nits. There are different companies that sell lice or nit combs. They are more commonly found in pharmacies and pet shops than in regular stores. Plastic combs are inexpensive and flexible. Metal combs are slightly more expensive. There are also nit combs made of wood or bamboo whose handles have inlaid designs. Experts recommend the metal hair lice comb. Other than the material being made of metal, a lice comb should have long teeth, finely spaced and the space between the handle and the teeth should be sealed so that live lice can’t hide inside.
You need several other items for hair lice removal. Prepare a towel, your hair lice comb, hair pins for holding hair sections in place, a basin with water and some sort of oil or cream for the hair. Make sure you stay in a well-lighted room. Seat your child or the person being treated below eye level. Prepare the hair by using a regular comb to smooth out the tangles. After that, apply baby oil, olive oil or coconut oil to the hair making sure that all the strands are covered. You may also use hair conditioner or other products to lubricate the hair.
Next divide the hair into sections, pinning each divided section as you go. Take your hair lice comb and run through each portioned part. Shake the comb over the basin as you reach the ends so that anything caught by the comb can get dumped on the water. Continue until you have combed all the sections. Flush the water into the toilet when you’re done. Disinfect the comb by soaking it in ammonia water for 15mins. Use 1 teaspoon ammonia to 2 cups hot water. You may also boil the comb for 15 minutes then use an old toothbrush to rid it of any remaining grime or dirt. The towel and other clothing should be laundered with the dryer set on high for 30 minutes to kill any lice or eggs that dropped or got shaken on to the clothes. Use the hair lice comb every day until no more nits are visible. All other family members should also be combed.
The hair lice combing method can seem very tiresome and time consuming but there is no other method that is as efficient. It is also the best way to prevent future infestation. Hair lice combing if it’s done periodically will certainly help you monitor your family’s hair health. If you’re the techie type, there’s another lice comb available in the market. It is an electronic hair comb that works like your usual lice comb minus the fuss. It runs on one AA battery and zaps any nit or louse it detects and gathers it. Whichever type of lice comb you use, remember that this is the most proven method for getting rid of all lice and nits.
