AlbertaChickensEtc / how do I get rid of mite/lice egg clusters on feathers
Unfortunately I’ve had to deal with this same situation with my silkies.
You’ve got the first step out of the way by dealing with the mature mites/lice. Now I recommend you plan a good thorough bathing, dunking the entire bird (except head/ears)holding the bird under soapy warm water for a good 6 or more minutes. (I know boring standing there for 6 whole minutes!) while the bird is under water use this time to soak any droppings that may be stuck on foot feathers near vent area etc.
For the beard area I like to use a fine toothed flea comb. These come in plastic and metal. I prefer the metal flea comb myself.
Now depending on how much your bird has been handled this bathing job may go real easy or your bird may stress out and if your bird gets really upset you want to finish up as quick as possible. Signs of stress that could turn out badly are heavy panting and generally flapping wings and such. You don’t want to cause your bird to have heart failure so be aware at all times of any stress your bird is exhibiting. Some birds take bathing all in stride others not so much!
Be sure in advance of bathing; bringout all the items you’ll need:
Towels
Ice cream buckets x 2 one full of warm soapy water and one for rinsing (I place them in bathroom sink to keep water spillage to a minimum)
Extra soap or shampoo
Nail clippers for toe nails / beak
Blood stop powder (sometimes called Nik stop-sold in pet stores) in case you cut a toe nail too short
Blow dryer (with cold/warm settings)
When you blow dry your bird do not use the hot setting. Birds having feathers overheat EXTREMELY easy. Towel dry as much as possible PRIOR to using the blow dryer.
I like to set bird on counter on a towel with paper towel under the butt area as they ALWAYS take a poo while standing there. When they poo you can then just remove the paper towel and place a clean one in same spot!
You will need to re-dust your bird in 10 days to be sure they are totally bug free, so any stray mites are killed dead! That second dusting breaks the lifecycle.
Okay well I know I could go on and on but in a nut shell thats what I do and it seems to have worked great over the years.
Love a silkie today!
Tracy
